God's Adoption Story

The miracle of adoption — and the God who adopts us all. 

There once was a man who struggled to understand what true love really was. He believed in God, but he did not yet understand how deeply God loved him or what it meant to be adopted into God’s family. So God chose a very special way to teach him — through the adoption of a little girl.

A Mommy and Daddy Who Longed for a Child

The man and his wife were very sad. They longed to be a mommy and daddy, but they could not have a baby. They went to a doctor, but even he could not explain why they were unable to conceive.

So they prayed.

They asked God, “What should we do about becoming a mommy and daddy?” And in their hearts, they felt God leading them to adopt a little girl from China.

They went to an adoption agency, filled out all the paperwork, and began the long wait. Two years passed. It felt like forever. But at last, the notice came — they were approved to travel to China and receive their daughter.

They boarded a plane and flew thirteen hours, full of excitement and hope. In China they met a kind man named Michael, who helped guide them and the other families through the adoption process. They reviewed the official documents one last time — papers sealed by both China and the United States — declaring that their daughter belonged to them and no one could ever take her away.

Meeting Grace

The next day, in a hotel meeting room, the orphanage workers brought out all the little girls. When they called the name Xiao‑Yong, the man and woman stepped forward to meet their daughter for the first time. They named her Grace.

They cried tears of joy.

They took pictures, played peek‑a‑boo, pushed her in her stroller, and thanked God again and again for the gift of their daughter.

After two weeks in China, they boarded a plane to return home. When the plane landed, the pilot made a special announcement: he wanted to be the first to welcome home all the new citizens of the United States. People stood up in celebration as Grace and the other adopted girls were welcomed home.

A Lesson Beside the River

One day, after they returned home, the father and Grace were down by the river throwing rocks into the water. As he watched the ripples spread, God spoke to his heart.

Just as he and his wife longed for a child and used the adoption process to bring Grace into their family, God the Father longs for sons and daughters — and He uses the adoption process to bring us into His family.

In that moment, the man began to understand God’s great love for him, and for all of us.

The Bigger Story: God’s Adoption Plan

From the very beginning, God desired a family — many sons and daughters who would walk with Him in love. But Satan deceived Adam and Eve, and sin entered the world. Because of their disobedience, God sent them out of the garden, and His heart was grieved. Yet His plan never changed.

He promised that one day a Child would come — One who would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15).

And in the fullness of time, God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, born of Mary, so that we might receive adoption as sons and daughters. Through Jesus, God sends the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, teaching us to cry out, “Abba! Father!” — Daddy.

Anyone who believes in their heart and confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believes that God raised Him from the dead, will be saved (Romans 10:9–10). This is how we enter God’s family.

But to understand adoption, we must understand why Jesus was sent.

Why God Sent His Son

Saviour

Jesus came to save us from our sins. On the cross He took our guilt, shame, and condemnation. God looks upon all who are in Christ and declares them forgiven.

But Jesus also saves us through the Holy Spirit, who lives within us — teaching us truth, righteousness, and holiness. The Spirit gives us a hatred for sin, a desire for holiness, and strength to obey. He purifies us, cleanses us, and prepares us to stand before the Father without spot or wrinkle.

High Priest

Jesus offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins. He entered Heaven by His own blood and obtained eternal redemption for us. He became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God.

Now He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. Because of His work, He is able to save completely all who come to God through Him.

Advocate

When we sin, we have an Advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). He does not persuade an unwilling God to forgive us. It was the Father who sent Jesus to save us. Jesus presents our prayers to the Father, covered in His holiness.

Heaven rejoices over every sinner who repents. And when we believe, God adopts us into His family and seals us with His Holy Spirit — His official mark that we belong to Him forever. No one can take us away from our Father.

Welcomed Home Forever

Just as Grace was welcomed home by cheering passengers on the airplane, one day Jesus will return and bring all God’s sons and daughters home to the Father. And if we die before He comes, we will go to be with Him immediately. On that day, angels and saints will rejoice as the Father welcomes us home forever.
